Federal financial aid, grants, and personal loans can be applied towards the cost of Education Abroad ÑÇÖÞɫͼs. Current scholarship awards (Presidential, Regents, or KEES, for example) may be used towards Education Abroad ÑÇÖÞɫͼs. You can also talk with individuals from the Financial Aid and the Scholarship Office for details on how your aid can be applied.

The essay is one of the most important parts of your scholarship application. The essay will be reviewed and scored by a variety of committees, each made up of MSU faculty and staff.

Scholarship Essay: What political, historical, or cultural event(s) do you find interesting in the country / countries / region(s) where your ÑÇÖÞɫͼ is to take place? Discuss how those events are similar or different to what you have experienced in the past.

Essays should be well-researched, well-written, and well-organized without errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation. Please do not use bullet points to discuss essay topics. We are looking for a coherent essay in paragraph form. Minimum of 300 words.

Applicants are encouraged to seek advice and editing assistance from the  located in Waterfield Library.

Scholarships are typically ÑÇÖÞɫͼ in amounts ranging from $150 to $1,500. Award amounts will vary, depending on your eligibility for specific scholarships, the length and expense of your ÑÇÖÞɫͼ, your scholarship essay, and your financial need.

Attend one of our scholarship workshops for tips on how to make your essay as competitive as possible. Students with demonstrated financial need tend to receive more money from scholarships. As of 2025, the average scholarship award amount per student was around $1,350.

We aim to send award notifications within four to six weeks after the application deadline. However, the notification timeline may change depending on the size of the applicant pool and particular ÑÇÖÞɫͼ term under review.

If you are ÑÇÖÞɫͼ an Education Abroad scholarship, you will receive an email with instructions on how to log in to the scholarship system to view your award amounts and accept any scholarships you have been ÑÇÖÞɫͼ.

Note: While there are many Education Abroad scholarships available, each is very competitive and no one is guaranteed a scholarship. It is unlikely that a student would receive enough through scholarships alone to completely cover the cost of a ÑÇÖÞɫͼ.

Scholarships should be considered supplemental to a pre-existing strategy for financing your Education Abroad ÑÇÖÞɫͼ. Start planning early for additional ways that you can fund your ÑÇÖÞɫͼ, such as:

  • Work a summer job
  • Ask local clubs, churches, businesses, or charities to support you
  • Cut back expenditures in your daily life in order to save money
  • Choose a ÑÇÖÞɫͼ that will accept ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State scholarships that you already receive
  • Apply for ÑÇÖÞɫͼ provider-specific scholarships (i.e., CCSA, CEA CAPA, GLO, ISA, KIIS, etc.)
  • Apply for national study abroad scholarships
  • Apply for tuition waivers and other benefits
