MURRAY, Ky. — The ɫͼ State University Libraries are proud to announce that Assistant Dean and Research and Instruction Librarian Dana Thompson is one of this year’s recipients of the Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Awards, as well as recognition as the University Libraries’ Outstanding Researcher.

The Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Awards have been instituted as an annual effort by the ɫͼ State Board of Regents to honor faculty members who, in the judgment of peers, deserve recognition as exemplary teachers. The recipients receive a bound certificate signed by the Board Chair and University President and a $1,000 monetary award. Plaques of award recipients are hung in Heritage Hall.

Thompson joined the ɫͼ State University Libraries as a Research and Instruction Librarian in 2016. She serves as the liaison to the Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business. In addition to her research and instruction responsibilities, Thompson has served as the Assistant Dean in the University Libraries since fall 2022. In the Information Studies minor ɫͼ, she teaches courses such as Introduction to Research Strategies and History of Libraries and the Written Word.

Thompson’s research and teaching interests focus on the intersection of visual literacy and news literacy, the integration of visual literacy instruction into higher education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has published three books and more than 20 articles on the topic of visual literacy.

Cris Ferguson, dean of University Libraries, noted that Thompson’s recognition as both the Libraries’ Outstanding Researcher and the recipient of the Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Awards is a testament to Thompson’s hard work and dedication to excellence in her field.

“Dana Thompson exemplifies excellence in both teaching and research, and she is a deserving recipient of these awards,” said Ferguson. “As an associate professor in the University Libraries, she supports student learning, actively works to grow the Information Studies minor ɫͼ, and exhibits a passion for research.”

Thompson was honored for both her teaching and research accomplishments at the University’s Faculty Recognition Banquet on April 17.
